Content includes:
• A list of international events for 2020 that you might want to visit
• How one member promoted the understanding of acoustics to Year 4 pupils as part of their STEM curriculum (take away from this experience – take ear defenders)
• News reports from IOA Branches, including a report by the Yorkshire and North East Branch about a presentation by Professor Greg Watts on his assessment of the perceived tranquillity in New Zealand – including noise from helicopters, jet boats and high voltage conductors used in their power industry
• We outline the work of the IOA Membership Committee – emphasising the care that has to be taken when proposing a new member. It is incumbent on the proposer to verify that EVERYTHING the applicant writes on their application from is a true and accurate record
• Many members will know Michael James Griffin. He was an internationally respected Professor of Human Factors at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) of the University of Southampton and was universally recognised as the foremost expert in the world on human response to vibration. He died in August and Gurmail Paddan, Henrietta Howard and Ken Parsons have written his touching obituary
• Ever wondered about issues concerning the prediction or mapping of Max values? In Instrumentation Corner on page 26, Mark Dowie and Tony Higgins pick apart the WHO Environmental Noise Guidelines
• On page 40, regular contributor, Philip Dunbavin, says that Technical Specification ISO/TS 12913-3:2019, Acoustics Landscapes, should be published by Christmas. Don’t expect it to be light holiday reading though – the bibliography enjoys 65 references…
