The Challenge of Kennel Noise Assessment

For years, assessing the impact of dog barking, whining, and howling has been a complex challenge for acoustics professionals and Environmental Health Officers. Without a unified approach, practitioners have often had to adapt existing methodologies - such as BS 4142 (which explicitly excludes domesticated animals), referencing WHO Community Noise Guidelines (definitely out of scope!), or local authority criteria - leading to inconsistent assessment outcomes across the community.

Introducing the New Draft ProPG

To address this gap, a new Draft Professional Practice Guidance (ProPG) has been published. Produced by the Association of Noise Consultants (ANC) with input from IOA and CIEH representatives, the draft provides a dedicated framework for assessing and managing noise from dog kennels affecting noise-sensitive receptors (NSRs).

What This Webinar Will Cover

Join us for a focused, one-hour lunchtime webinar to break down the proposed guidance and discuss the active consultation questions. Our agenda includes:

  • Scope & Application: Understanding which facilities are covered, from boarding kennels to veterinary practices.
  • Source Data & Measurement: Examining the recommended "on-time" corrections—such as 10 minutes of barking in a 60-minute period—and best practices for collecting site-specific data.
  • New Assessment Methodologies: Learning how to calculate the Dog Vocalisation Level (DVL) using LAeq levels to compare against LA90 background sound levels.
  • Sleep Disturbance Criteria: Reviewing the LAFmax assessment methods designed specifically to address night-time noise impacts.
  • Context & Mitigation: Factoring in the acoustic character of an area and exploring effective Noise Management Plans (NMPs) and building design considerations.
