Impact of road traffic noise on walkers and cyclists is considered in new design guidance from Active Travel England
In July Active Travel England (ATE) published its first Rural Design Guide, intended to helping councils and scheme designers to create better walking, wheeling and cycling routes in rural areas across England. Throughout the guidnace, the importance of considering noise impacts on routes walkers and cyclists is acknowledged, in particular in designing routes alongside major highways, where noise banks, planting and fencing are options for reducing noise impact, while taking into account visibility and security.
With almost two thirds of GB road deaths on rural roads, the guide aims to support creation of safer, cheaper and healthier journeys, and contirbute to the reduction of noise and air pollution.
